Il dipinto trova affinità stilistiche e compositive con due tele raffiguranti un'analoga campionatura di animali selvatici e domestici, offerte nel lotto 129 dell'asta Minerva lo scorso 29 novembre 2016. L'anonimo pittore, che sigla l'opera in esame G.S.M., sembrerebbe conoscere bene l'ambiente artistico romano della seconda metà del Seicento, anche se l'attenzione con cui sa descrivere, l'habitat lacustre, in punta di pennello, ci porterebbe a riconoscere una sua formazione nel nord Europa.
