L'opera raccoglie prescrizioni e "segreti" relativi a moltissime attività: ricette domestiche, agricoltura, artigianato e arti applicate come incisione, doratura, miniatura, laccatura, smalti, porcellane, papiers-peints. Il repertorio è particolarmente interessante per le notizie sulle tecniche artistiche settecentesche, prima del passaggio alla chimica moderna.
